What to Expect - Board and Train

Let's Prepare you for training!

If you're reading this you've booked, or are preparing to book your first board and train with The Everyday Trainer. Everything you need to know, do, and have for our training program will be found in this blog post! We will be going over everything from equipment to drop off and go home.

For starters, let's take a deep breath. There is no need to be nervous for your board and train, remember, we are here to help you and your dog succeed in having a healthy relationship. We want both you and your dog to reach your full potential and fix any issues you may be having.

What to expect:

Day of:

We will send reminder texts leading up to the day of your Board and Train with us and a reminder an hour before your scheduled drop off. We have all crates, bowls, blankets, and toys so all you will need to bring is your dog on a leash and enough food for their stay. Monday through Friday you will receive training updates through your trainers instagram. This is where we will post all photos, videos, and training sessions we’re doing with your dog while they’re with us.

At Drop off, your trainer will meet you outside for introductions and to grab any food and belongings. After that your trainer will go for a quick walk with you and your dog. This walk allows us to do a seamless hand off from you to the trainer without conflict.

Our two week Board and Train program is designed for puppies and adult dogs 3 months and up with mild behavioral issues. This program focuses on crate training, on leash obedience, and state-of-mind work. Our Board and Train program takes place in the trainers home and is designed to prepare your pup or adult dog to live calmly and confidently back at home and wherever you may take them.

Our three week E-collar Board and Train program is designed for adult dogs 6 months and up with mild to severe behavioral issues. This behavioral modification program addresses the dog’s state of mind - which is often the root cause of many behavioral issues we see. Our Board and Train program takes place in the trainers home and is designed to work through problems including pulling on leash, separation anxiety, barking, not coming when called, destructive behavior, and reactivity.

What do you need to have for your board and train?

Every household is different, just like every dog is different. But whether you have a brand new puppy, or a dog who has developed problem behaviors, there's a few things that every dog can benefit greatly from.

A place cot. You will want to get a good sized cot so that we can continue enforcing the "Place" command once your dog returns home. We teach our dogs to stay on 'place' for an extended period of time. We use and recommend an "elevated dog cot" style. They are around $20 on amazon and they have great benefits when it comes to training.

A slip lead leash. No leash? No worries we've got you covered! When you book a board and train with us we will send your dog home with one of our Everyday Slip Leads. This will be our main form of communication and one of the most valuable tools in our training.

A size appropriate crate. For those who already have a dog crate in their house, great! If not, that’s okay too! If you have a puppy, an adolescent dog, or an adult dog struggling with a behavioral issue such as reactivity, separation anxiety, resource guarding or any other problem behaviors the crate is a tool that will be highly beneficial in their progress. If you don’t have a crate and need help sizing one for your dog, just let us know and we’re more than happy to help you find the perfect size.

After training:

At the end of your Board and Train we’ll have a 2 hour go-home session with you where we will cover everything your dog has learned and how to keep up with it back at home. The most important part of this program is teaching you how to continue the training and structure your dog needs to thrive long after the training with us is over. If after our go home session you need any more help we are more than happy to continue lessons as needed.

We want to thank you very much for trusting our team with your dogs. We know how much they mean to you, it’s our pleasure to help you and your dog achieve a balanced lifestyle!

Happy Training!
